If you choose to travel these avenues, keep in mind that you will need a little patience and might need to pay a bit more. Here are some DVDs that you might have trouble finding:

  • Foreign films – Foreign films that are less well-known are notoriously difficult to find.
  • In general, art house movies do not receive wide distribution, so few DVDs are produced of them.
  • Collector’s edition – Some films offer collector’s editions with extras like bonus clips and outtakes, as well as interviews with the cast and crew. Collector’s editions are only sold during a short period of time, so if you didn’t purchase the DVD during that time period, you will have a hard time finding one.
  • Out of print films – Some films, mostly older ones, are no longer available on DVD, making them almost impossible to find. Although the rights to these films are largely owned by studios, many are now beginning to make them available on DVD.

Locating hard-to-find DVDs

There are plenty of online stores that stock these types of movies, even if your local video store doesn’t. You can find anything online, especially classic movies like The Blob and foreign love stories like The Scent of Green Papaya. You can find these types of DVDs in the following places:

  • The website Movies Unlimited offers new movies in DVD and Blu-Ray formats. Movies Unlimited offers a huge selection of out of print films (films that have been discontinued by the manufacturer), including the anniversary editions of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and West Side Story.
  • Films on DVD and video are available from this website. In addition, if you cannot seem to find the movie you are looking for, then you can call them and they will try to find it for you.

It has taken some time for manufacturers to release classic and lesser known films on DVD because of the switch from VHS to DVD. Most of these manufacturers were more focused on producing the big box office blockbusters than rare or hard-to-find films. With the move from DVD to Blu-Ray, these types of films may now become even harder to locate. Eventually, though, the manufacturers seem to catch up and offer these films in DVD format, it just takes a bit longer than it did initially.
