Understanding Industrial Automation: Key Concepts and Technologies Simplified

You often hear about these terms: RLC, PLC, SCADA, HMI, VFD, and more. Do you know what they mean? Why are they needed, and when do industries require them? All these terms belong to automation.

So, first of all, we need to understand automation. The word “automation” comes from two words: “automatic” and “motion.”

  • Automatic means something happening by itself.
  • Motion refers to action, movement, changes, or modifications.

Automation means making things happen by themselves, without human intervention. You might say, “I know what automation is—it’s when things happen independently.” But when we talk about things like RLC, PLC, SCADA, AAI, and VFD, what are they?

Let’s start with a simple example. When you’re thirsty at home, you go to the RO water purifier, place the bottle under the tap, and the water starts flowing automatically, right? But you still need to open and close the valve manually. Now, in an industry, things are automated. For example, no one manually fills each bottle in a bottling plant like Bisleri’s. The bottles are automatically placed under the valve, and the valve opens, fills it, and then shuts it off. This entire process happens automatically.

Automation in industry is done using two main methods:

  1. RLC (Relay Logic Controller)
  2. PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)

What is the difference between RLC and PLC?

When you think of automatic machines in industries, you probably think of a panel with wires—the RLC panel or Relay Logic Controller. This system controls machines using hard-wired relays, timers, and contactors. The logic that controls the machine is created with these relays.

When discussing the PLC Systems, we see it’s a more modern system. The full form of PLC is a Programmable Logic Controller, and instead of hard-wiring logic, we use programming. The logic is designed on a computer using ladder logic, a language similar to circuit diagrams you might draw by hand. In PLC, the program is created and then transferred to the PLC to control the machine. A PLC can control various automation processes, including motors and encoders, to provide feedback for adjustments in real-time.

The advantage of PLC is that if a problem occurs, you can easily find and fix it in the program. With RLC, you’d have to troubleshoot through the physical wiring.

So, PLC and RLC both automate machines, but PLC is easier to troubleshoot and update because everything is programmed and can be changed without rewiring.

Now, what about SCADA and HMI? SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, and HMI stands for Human-Machine Interface.

SCADA

SCADA is used in industries to monitor and control machines and processes. For instance, in a factory with multiple tanks, a supervisor can use SCADA to monitor the liquid levels in all the tanks from a single location, even if the tanks are spread across the building. SCADA provides real-time data and can trigger alarms if something goes wrong, allowing the operator to intervene immediately.

HMI

HMI, on the other hand, is the interface that allows operators to interact with the machine. It’s like a touch screen where the operator can adjust settings or input data, and this data is sent to the PLC for execution.

VFD

Finally, we come to VFD (Variable Frequency Drive). VFDs are used to control the speed of motors in industries. Motors are one of the most widely used machines in industries, and controlling their speed is crucial. For example, you can adjust the speed of a conveyor belt using a VFD. It controls the frequency of the power supplied to the motor, which controls its speed. VFDs also reduce motors’ starting current, especially when the motor has a heavy load during startup.

In summary:

  • RLC: Old-school method using relays to control machines.
  • PLC: A modern, programmable method to automate machines.
  • SCADA: Used for supervisory control, monitoring, and acquiring data from machines.
  • HMI: Interface for operators to interact with machines.
  • VFD: Controls motor speed and starting current.
